August kept us busy — full bedrooms, full hands, and no shortage of drama.
Cats
When Cosmo and Myrtle's rehoming fell through at the last minute, and Gus and Mocha had nowhere to go after their owners left Kenya, we took them all in — a cat or two per bedroom, carefully distributed to avoid feline politics. Shosho, our foster cat and resident toothless old lady of the house, was having none of it — a hissing fit and a full display of disapproval for every new arrival; puppies are simply more her thing. PurrsandPaws and PawPals soon stepped in to foster Cosmo and Myrtle, since they're outdoor cats — a huge weight off us, and off our bedrooms.
We also worked with Dr Mohsin to spay two stray teenage cats before their pregnancies advanced. Maddy to go back to her food source, while Tabitha, now looking for a home, owes her safe arrival to Top Tails, instrumental in getting her to us.
Dogs
Top Tails caught and safely brought us Raven, an abandoned female we took in from Tigoni, alongside a free-roaming female from Ruaka — both now spayed, the latter to be released back to her home area where a kind lady feeds her daily. Then came Gramps, an old, toothless village dog found collapsed for days, now thriving at the sanctuary as a beloved resident and, it turns out, quite the ladies' man. Fluffy Bella joined us too, surrendered by her elderly owners who could no longer care for her; she's healing beautifully post-spay, still working out exactly what to make of our madhouse.
Marley, another lovely pup, is slowly recovering from pneumonia. And a young dog, Levi, adopted out by Pawmoja over a year ago and returned to them unsocialised, is finally settling in with us, surrounded by other dogs and finding his feet again.
Free-roaming Mama Maya and Gigi are our current short-term stays, recovering with us after being spayed before heading back to their turfs.
The toughest case this month involved a family who depended on their breadwinner's income until she lost her job, leaving their four female dogs in urgent need of spaying. We connected with NSSA, run by Linet, whose proximity to the family made the operation possible, while we covered the cost. Two are done, two are still waiting on their owners, and we're hoping to get them in soon.
Donations
None of this happens without the people behind us. Having only just gained our registration in July 2026, we've relied entirely on well-wishers — word spread through the Karura Group brought in new and gently used items we're deeply grateful for. Kavita and her wonderfully resourceful, thoughtful son fundraised for 68 sturdy blankets from Spinners and Spinners, and connected us with Petstore, who donated food and wooden pallets that are now double-decker dog beds.
Deep gratitude also to Cloud One Ltd, who supported us with vet bills and this month's spays, and donated two containers fully converted into open kennels. AEHS Ltd stepped in again too, providing durable insulation for the containers to keep our dogs warm and cosy.
